The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that promotes volunteerism to support peace and development worldwide. Volunteerism can transform the pace and nature of development and it benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer. UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for volunteerism globally, encouraging partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing volunteers. In most cultures volunteerism is deeply embedded in long-established, ancient traditions of sharing and support within the communities. In this context, UN Volunteers take part in various forms of volunteerism and play a role in development and peace together with co-workers, host agencies and local communities. In all assignments, UN Volunteers promote volunteerism through their action and conduct. Engaging in volunteer activity can effectively and positively enrich their understanding of local and social realities, as well as create a bridge between themselves and the people in their host community. This will make the time they spend as UN Volunteers even more rewarding and productive. The strategic priorities of the 2011-2015 UNICEF Indonesia Country Program Document include the need for evidence-based advocacy to ensure the rights of the most vulnerable children are addressed in policy formulation, while identifying and emphasizing the importance of child and youth participation in the process of generating such evidence and knowledge. There is a growing organizational drive within UNICEF towards promoting INNOVATION activities to support programmes. This also includes reinforcing youth and adolescent engagement as well as technology driven opportunities to empower young people to make positive changes in their lives. In line with global directions, UNICEF Indonesia utilized its 2013 Mid Term Review process to introduce and consolidate Innovations initiatives as a cross-cutting implementation strategy, to support the achievement of programme results. Given Indonesia�s huge youth population, with approximately 81.3 million children under 18 and nearly half of the population being youth, tapping into the huge potential of young people and partnering with them on the issue of social development and children�s rights, youth and adolescents are an important group for UNICEF. One of the key innovations initiatives identified by the CO is establishing a youth engagement platform via the use of social media, similar in concept to U-Report � a regular interaction with the community via SMS and social media broadcasting which was rolled out successfully and developed by UNICEF in Uganda. In order to successfully roll out U-Report in Indonesia, there needs to be an intense and dedicated focus on reaching out to youth and adolescent organizations, schools, universities, NGOS, communities, and individuals to create strong partnerships with these groups, and to ensure their participation with the platform. U-Report here in Indonesia and the additional youth oriented innovation initiatives of the Innovation Lab hinges on effectively engaging and empowering young people to participate as active citizens, develop solutions to local problems and engage in affirmative social action. Towards this aim, UNICEF Indonesia has developed specific strategies which it can use to reach out to a sizeable population of young people. For 60 years, UNICEF has been working on the ground in 190 countries and territories to promote children's survival, protection and development. UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNICEF is funded by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments. The National UN Volunteer will be placed in the Knowledge Management (KM) unit within the Communications cluster, working directly on the innovations initiatives as identified by the office. Specifically, the key tasks will focus on youth and adolescent engagement and participation issues for innovation initiatives. Under the direct supervision of the KM Specialist, the incumbent will need to work closely with the Innovation Lab Lead, the Education and Adolescents Development (EAD) cluster and other relevant colleagues within UNICEF. The UNV is also expected to work with the Social Media Specialist to support content generation for UNICEF�s social media platforms, as much of this is linked to reaching out to young people through dissemination of relevant information. S/he is also expected to provide overall support in content generation for the Communication Cluster in Bahasa Indonesia. Duties and Responsibilities Support to the UNICEF�s Innovation Lab and EAD cluster to ensure that the adolescents and youth engagement strategy is operationalized for the U-Report Indonesia. Complete a mapping exercise of schools, universities, and NGOs working on youth issues towards liaising with youth, and promoting U-Report registration. Strengthen the Lab Lead to conduct innovation workshops and event based activities. Support the creation and coordination of a new youth research programme to enable youth participants to submit projects proposals to UNICEF for a small seed-funding competition. Support the knowledge management team to document lessons learnt and good practices on the innovation initiatives. Develop communication materials on U-Report Indonesia for knowledge dissemination, including managing a bilingual online documentation platform. In collaboration with the Social Media Specialist generate Bahasa content for UNICEF Indonesia�s social media platforms. In collaboration with other parts of the Communication Cluster (Fundraising, Communication for Development) and as advised by the Chief of Communications, support the generation of content in Bahasa Indonesia. Furthermore, UNV volunteers are encouraged to: Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark IVD); Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country, supporting the specific objectives of the assignment; Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities, and its benefits in general and for the specific assignment; Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/ websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UNV volunteers; Promote and advise local groups in the use of UNV Online Volunteering, and encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever possible. Results/Expected Output: Significant contribution to Youth engagement and the strategic operationalization of the U-Report Indonesia. Living Conditions: The position will be based in the capital city, Jakarta, where basic living needs, including accommodation, banking facilities, medical facilities and telecommunications/internet services are readily available.
